We believe that having quality dialogue with our people, recognizing the value they bring and championing an authentic culture generates engaged employees and a company that is more innovative, productive and competitive.
Launched in 2019, The PPG Way is how we enable, empower and engage each employee to implement the strategies needed to strengthen our position as an industry leader. It guides our employees and leaders as we strive to achieve our purpose of protecting and beautifying the world.
Employee engagement is a measure of how authentically we are living our culture. We conduct PPG Pulse Surveys multiple times each year to increase dialogue among teams and implement meaningful action to improve results.
In 2019, three PPG Pulse Surveys indicated an improvement of 6% in overall employee engagement from 2018 and highlighted that our engaged leaders have teams that are five times more engaged. We focused on improving the engagement of our senior leaders during the year, achieving 60% engaged and a ratio of 12:1 on engaged versus actively disengaged. The senior leader engagement rate was 22% higher than 2018.
We believe the best way to create and sustain a highly engaged environment is through candid and continuous dialogue. In 2019, we launched root-cause sessions with our teams across the globe, enabling them to uncover and commit to adopting specific behaviors that matter most to their everyday engagement and bring the PPG Way to life in our work.
According to Gallup, a team’s engagement is influenced up to 70% by its leader. In 2019, more than 400 of our leaders participated in regional leadership meetings across the globe. Each participant made visible leadership commitments to connect more broadly and inspire their teams. These teams began developing solutions to some of the obstacles that were identified as areas for improvement, and the work is ongoing.
To help employees feel appreciated for their impact, we have a variety of formal award programs focused on sales, sustainability, health, wellness and other important aspects of our company. These are supplemented with informal everyday recognitions from our leaders that are equally important, such as recognizing a person during a team meeting, giving gift cards for superior performance or simply telling someone he or she is appreciated.
A measure of our engagement success is turnover rate, which was 18.2% in 2019.
